IT’S a new era for youth football in Clacton.

Clacton United and Elmden Rovers have merged and hope to become a major force in the Colchester and District Youth League.

United decided during the summer that, due to unforeseen circumstances, they could no longer continue.

However, in order to keep their squads together, and to make sure all their players continued playing together, they agreed to merge with Elmden.

They will play under the Elmden name, with 15 teams entered into the youth league and one men’s team in the Essex and Suffolk Border League.

“It’s with great pleasure that we welcome all the players, parents, coaches and committee members to Elmden,” said Rovers chairman Andy Hagen.

“As one club, we will keep to the tradition and values shared by both clubs, in order to secure the long-term future of football in Clacton.”

In a joint-statement, Leech added: “May I take this opportunity to thank everyone at Elmden for the help and consideration shown to our club during the merger. We’re all looking forward to a new era of football.”

Youth-team home matches will be played at Parish Fields, in Plough Corner, and the men’s home matches will continue to be played at Vista Road.
