Preparations for next season's first campaign in the Blue Square South are already underway as Chelmsford City have been quick to tie down local Coca-Cola League One side Colchester United for a pre-season friendly match.
The match against Geraint Williams' U's, who were only relegated from the second tier of English football this season, will kick-off at Melbourne at 7.45pm on Wednesday July 23. It is expected to attract a similarly healthy crowd to the visit of a strong team for a warm-up game in 2007/08.
City gained promotion to the Conference setup during the campaign just finished, and are keen to establish themselves with a testing set of friendlies behind them.
Strengthening off the pitch is also a currently a concern of the club, to the extent they are seeking an assistant secretary to help with the important behind the scenes work at Melbourne.
With the club's recent advancement both on and off the field, it has been decided to enlarge the football secretarial team. An opportunity has, therefore, arisen for the position of assistant hon. secretary.
Duties will involve assisting the secretary for match arrangements and liaising with the match officials as well as dealing with general correspondence and accepting matchday duties, although this list is not exhaustive! Deputising for the Secretary may also occasionally be necessary.
Interested parties should write to: The Secretary, Chelmsford City Football Club, Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre, Salerno Way, Chelmsford, CM1 2EH. Alternatively, e-mail honsecccfc@aol.com.
On the fairer side of the club, Chelmsford City Ladies made up for their narrow penalty shootout loss in the County Cup final against Colchester United the previous week, by confirming the title in the Eastern Region Women's League at the weekend, with a 5-0 victory over Arlesey Town on Sunday.
They had seen better days, but Sarah Claxton had been happy to get her first running shoes – a second-hand pair of spikes.
A large flatscreen television dominates the front room of Jamie and Amy Kidd’s house in Colchester.
Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling have finally scrapped October’s planned 2p rise in fuel duty, but that will not sort out the current high prices – especially as that duty increase will probably hit next April. In the last of our features on Facing the Fuel Crisis, the Gazette looks at the problems facing Essex’s farmers – and why two of our biggest supermarkets are not feeling the pinch. Essex's wheatfields might not be on the same scale as Kansas, but they still take up nearly 250,000 acres.
Spiralling fuel prices are a double-edged sword for bus operators.
By the middle of last month, Essex Fire and Rescue Service had spent more than 30 per cent of its annual fuel budget.
