CHELMSFORD City ended the season on a downer, but their defeat at Ashford Town (Middlesex) at the weekend didn't dampen spirits as the players paraded the championship trophy at Short Lane.

Two goals in each half saw the Clarets go down 4-0 to a team desperate for the points.

But head coach Glenn Pennyfather expected a match of that description was on the cards, explaining: "Ashford had everything to play for on the day but there will be no excuses from us.

"This sort of performance could have happened in any of our previous few games since we won the League, with little motivation as well as a lack of edge or intensity."

Now attentions turn firmly to constructing the retained list at the club, with a busy summer ahead as Jeff King and his sidekick construct a squad capable of progressing in the Blue Square South next season.

"We know enough about their strengths so things will be confirmed soon," Glen added.

"We've spoken to most of the players who know what the situation is."
