Witham looking to get feet back on the gas for cup final
Garry Kimble is hoping his Witham Town players’ feet are firmly back on the gas when they bid to complete the fourth leg of their glorious quadruple today.
Having gathered little but dust in recent seasons, the trophy cabinet at the Spicer McColl Stadium is suddenly groaning under the weight of silverware and they could add another piece with a victory in the Essex Senior League Cup final (kick-off 3pm).
Burnham Ramblers stand in the way of them adding it to the Essex Senior League title, the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy and the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Cup.
The final is being played at Enfield’s Goldsdown Ground and Witham gained their place by beating Barking 5-3 over two legs of a thrilling semi-final.
Manager Kimble admits his team may not have been at their best since claiming the league title and they rode their luck at times in the semi-final.
But they now have a chance to gain quickfire revenge for the defeat they suffered against Burnham in their final league game of the campaign.
Kimble said: “I told the players before the game (against Barking) that it could be their last game of the season, but thankfully that wasn’t the case.
“We got through and we’ve still got a chance to win four trophies this year.
“That’s still in our sights and to pull it off would be a huge achievement.
“I think some of the players took their feet off the gas in the last few weeks after the league title was secured, but I will make sure they are right on it again for the final.
“I haven’t picked my starting 11 yet and they’ll have to show me in training that they are worthy of being in the team.”
Kimble is hoping that he will have Rob Whitnell back available for the final.
The Witham striker has missed the last three games with an ankle problem, but Kimble said he has been moving around on it again and the swelling around the joint has gone down.
