The Essex Senior League chairman Rob Errington was “thrilled” to see Witham Town complete the job and lift the championship trophy on Saturday.

Town needed just one point from their game against third-placed Takeley to complete the formality of winning the title.

Errington said: “It’s great for Witham to win the trophy again as they were the winners in our first year in the 1971/2 season and then won it again in the 1985/6 season.

“It’s a really lovely piece of silverware and something really worth playing for.

“I’m really pleased for Witham as they definitely deserve it.

“They have been a credit to the league.

“Their discipline and their standard of football has been absolutely high class and that’s down to Garry Kimble as he has really hit it right.

“I’ll certainly be sorry to see them go.”
