Braintree Town are planning on staging a number of fundraising events for Jamie Guy after he suffered a horrific leg injury at Eastleigh.

Former Colchester United striker Guy suffered a double open fractured leg and broke a tibia and fibula in Iron's 2-0 win, in Blue Square Bet South.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury with the game 20 minutes old, when Eastleigh goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot crashed into him in the penalty area after the Iron striker had poked the ball past him.

Referee Robert Mackay awarded a penalty and booked Barfoot, before Guy was eventually taken to a Southampton hospital.

Braintree have already organised a collection for Guy, who was due to start a new job today, for tomorrow night's home game against Basingstoke Town.

And they plan to stage more Cressing Road events for the striker, as he begins his long road back to recovery.

Braintree manager Rod Stringer said: “We'll do whatever we can to help Jamie and the first thing will be to make sure that the lad can walk again properly.

“It was probably the worst injury I've seen, at any club I've been at.

“It was a clumsy, late challenge by their goalkeeper but the bad pitch didn't help.

“It marred the result because Jamie has been a great addition to our side this season and he plays with his heart on his sleeve.

“Jamie phoned me when we were on the coach home to find out how we'd got on and that's the type of lad he is.”
