Braintree Town are expected to have a new striker on board for their curtain-raiser against Farnborough on Saturday.

The Iron are closing in on a deal for a forward from a rival Blue Square South club, ahead of the new season.

They have submitted a seven-day approach for the player and expect the transfer to be wrapped up in time for this weekend’s big kick-off.

Braintree have been handed a further boost with the news that striker Jamie Guy should be fit enough to take his place on the bench on Saturday.

It had been feared that the former Colchester United man would be ruled out for several weeks with a foot injury sustained in pre-season.

However, his recovery has been quicker than expected and he could play a part against Farnborough.

Braintree drew with Redbridge in their final pre-season friendly on Monday night.
