THE Braintree Town fans were pleased to hail their team’s lofty position in the Vanarama National League South table as they beat Hungerford Town on Saturday, but manager Brad Quinton is being more reserved.

The Iron boss was delighted to hear his team’s early season form has got the Cressing Road terraces buoyant again, though, after a tough relegation campaign last year.

At one stage during their 5-0 home win against the Crusaders, Braintree were top of the National League South and even though Truro’s late winner at East Thurrock placed them top at the end of the day, it was a moment to savour for Braintree’s fans.

They were singing ‘we are top of the league’ but Quinton knows there is a long way to go before real celebrations can begin and he is keeping feet on the floor.

The Braintree boss said: “It’s great the position we’re in and I could hear the fans singing that we were top of the league.

“It’s nice for them to have that feeling again; it’s where we want to be.

“But at this moment in time, I’m happy with where we are.

“The boys have their targets and we’ll look at it again at Christmas.”

Part of the reason why Braintree have got themselves into such a strong position is their impressive home form so far that has seen them win four and draw two of their six games at the IronmongeryDirect Stadium.

And Quinton appreciates how important that is to rebuild home support following the disappointment of their relegation from the National League’s top flight last year.

“Every one of the boys are playing great football and they are enjoying it,” said Quinton.

“They are buzzing.

“They are working hard in training; we had a light session last Thursday (ahead of the Hungerford game) and they didn’t want to come in.

“That result shows what they can do.

“You can’t question their abilities and when they work hard for one another and are on point, that showed against Hungerford.

“It’s important to have home form like we have at the moment.

“I don’t mind getting beaten if it’s by a better team – that’s plain and simple – but it’s important to keep the fans coming in and enjoying their football.

“The level of expectation I want from my players is up there and if they don’t deliver then I’ll go and get someone else.

“It’s enjoyable at the minute, but we have to keep feet on the ground.

“We’ve enjoyed the result against Hungerford but we’re looking forward to the FA Cup now.”
