BRAINTREE Town goalkeeper Nathan McDonald feels manager Brad Quinton is going to have a problem on his hands ahead of the start of the season - but it’s not necessarily a bad one.

McDonald is one of a number of players to have come over to the Iron with Quinton from his former club, Enfield Town, as he builds a squad for Braintree to tackle the Vanarama National League South this year.

His new-look team performed well in their pre-season outing against League One side Southend United last weekend and then in midweek at Bury Town.

There are set to be further chances to impress when Football League sides Colchester United and Barnet visit on Saturday and Tuesday respectively as Quinton continues to hone his squad for the coming campaign.

However, McDonald feels the quality of players at the boss’ disposal means he’s going to have a tough time when it comes to cutting numbers down ahead of the season.

“There are a lot of lads who are here and I know Brad will be trimming it down, but I said to him that he’s going to have problems picking a side.

“But he’s the Gaffer and that’s why he has to make choices.

“It’s a good thing to have to be honest - a good problem.

“If you don’t have that problem then you don’t have enough good players.

“A lot of people were saying on Saturday that it was good to have a buzz back around the place and Brad brings that.

“Enfield had a buzz about it; they hadn’t finished high up for a long time and we got them back in the play-offs and we’ll look to go again this year.”

McDonald is one of a number of players to have followed Quinton from his former club, Enfield Town, to Braintree and, like his manager, it marks a return to the Iron for the goalkeeper.

The former England C keeper spent three seasons at Enfield and said it was nice to come back for the first home pre-season game against Southend last weekend.

“It’s great to be back after three years away,” he said.

“It’s good to see the fans, to be playing here again and I can’t wait for the season to start now.

“I saw a lot of faces around the ground on Saturday who I knew from before and it also helped on the pitch that there were a lot of people who have come over from Enfield.

“That helps as a team as you know each other and you’re not coming into a squad of boys where you have to get to know each other.

“Brad has got a core of players together as much as he could.

“He obviously couldn’t bring the whole side over, but he has a good group that he can build around.

“I think it’s shaping up very well.”

“We had our first real test against Southend and I thought we looked good.

“A lot of the boys got a really good run-out.

“Brad wants us playing out from the back, which I thought we did and it was good to go up against a team who are training full-time to test ourselves.

“They are a good side, but we did well and could even have nicked it.”
