HAKAN Hayrettin has revealed that it was the manner of his team’s defeat at Macclesfield Town that riled him most of all rather than the end result.

The Iron stumbled to a 2-0 Vanarama National League loss as the Rose Moss Stadium remained an unhappy hunting ground for them.

They have lost four of their five visits there now, but it was how his players performed that left Hayrettin seething at the end.

He gave a passionate post-match review as he revealed that his players hadn’t followed instructions given to them in contrast to how they had performed in beating North Ferriby and Eastleigh in their previous two games.

He said: “This group of players that we have inherited and accumulated have done an unbelievable job since we have been here.

“They have brought into what we want and the last two performances before our trip to Macclesfield showed that.

“They were different performances by my players.

“One was a battle where they showed their qualities against North Ferriby and they did not stop.

“The pleasing thing in that game was that they continued regardless and kept pushing.

“Then at Eastleigh, it was probably the most complete and professional performance you could wish for in terms of them doing what was asked of them and them doing the right things to get the result.

“We want players to express themselves and never advocate anything other than that, but what disappointed me at Macclesfield was that we were second best for the majority of the game. We did not use what we had at our disposal and people did not take on board what was needed to win that game.”

Hayrettin said it had highlighted to him how he and his coaching team will have to stay on top of the players between now and the end of the campaign to “keep drumming into” them what they need to do and not allow them any scope to deviate away from their game plan.

He added: “Sometimes when you get a performance like that, you have to keep drumming into the players what is needed to get the result, but we didn’t do the things that have got us points recently.

“I’m not going to make excuses, but it’s now my job to keep reminding them what is required.

“I applaud my players and how they have been since we have been here, but they didn’t do enough on the day.

“Had they done what we asked them and not got the result then I’d hold my hands up and say ‘fair play’.

“But we have to be better in terms of discipline and in our patterns of play.

“That’s what disappointed me more than the result. I’m passionate and I want my players and my team to do well, but the intelligence and professionalism was not there.

“So now we have to make sure that we get through to them what is required and get them to understand that because I know we can beat anyone in this league, but that performance shows what we are capable of if they don’t do what is required.

“There’s no pressing of the panic button, but we just have to keep reminding them what we want. The penny has dropped 75 per cent of the time, but we want it to drop in every game.”
