Jamie Day says he won’t settle for just “OK” as he looks to refine his squad and lift Braintree Town up the Vanarama National League table.

The Iron boss brought three new players in ahead of their 0-0 draw at Guiseley last weekend and with three games coming up in the next week – starting at home against Gateshead on Saturday – he is looking at possible further changes that may need to be made.

Two newcomers were loanees Sam Matthews and Brandon Goodship, who have joined from Premier League AFC Bournemouth and the other is a permanent addition in keeper Sam Beasant, who has come in from Cambridge United.

Since Day has signed the 6ft 5in 28-year-old keeper, Jamie Butler, who started the campaign in goal for Braintree, has left the Iron and while the manager was sorry to see him go, he felt it was a move he needed to make.

He said: “Sam is a big lad and that’s maybe something we’ve lacked in the last few games.

“He is a good goalkeeper who has played 40-odd Football League games as well as playing in the Conference.

“Hopefully his presence will help out the back four and I just felt that we needed to act.

“Jamie had done OK as I think six or seven in the squad have done OK, but I need to keep people on their toes because we need more than OK.

“I felt Jamie needed competition and Sam would give him that. Sam is a good size and has a lot of League experience and I moved to get him in once I knew he was available.”

Following the home game against Gateshead (kick-off 3pm), Braintree have a trip to Sutton United on Tuesday and then another away day at Chester the following weekend.
