Braintree Town manager Jamie Day only wants “warriors” to turn up when he takes his side to Guiseley in the Vanarama National League tomorrow.

There is a score to be settled with the Yorkshire side after the Iron’s trip there last year ended in acrimony due to a goal that earned Guiseley a point but came in controversial circumstances.

However, Day knows a better performance is needed than the one he saw in his team’s 3-1 defeat by Torquay United on Bank Holiday Monday.

He was scathing in his assessment of his team, saying he didn’t see the “passion or desire” he expected.

The Iron boss doesn’t want to fall into the trap of just bringing in a conveyor belt of new players but he isn’t prepared to accept further displays like he saw against Torquay.

“I can accept getting beaten but if there isn’t the passion and desire to win a game then that isn’t good enough,” he said.

“The supporters won’t accept it at Guiseley and I won’t put up with it either.

“It will be a tough game against a side who are struggling and we need to go there and win the game.

“We’ve lost too many games at this stage of the season and we’ve said to the players that if they don’t want to come to training on Thursday or play on Saturday then don’t turn up; we’ll cancel their contracts and look elsewhere.

“We need 16 warriors who want to play for this club and for me as their manager and do whatever it takes to win games.

“I haven’t spent all the budget so there is scope to make changes.

“Maybe it does need freshening up but the other side of that is a new set of players coming in.

“The danger is going through the course of a season and having 50-odd players.

“If you look at teams who have struggled in the past, they are constantly changing and it doesn’t work.

“So we need to make sure we bring the right players in for the right reasons.”

Day said Jack Midson’s knee injury and Michael Cheek’s ankle that kept them out against Torquay would be assessed ahead of Saturday’s trip to Guisley.
