NEW Braintree Town manager Jamie Day will have room in his first squad to bring in some more options at the back after the departure of two members of the Iron's defensive shield from last season.

Braintree boasted the Vanarama National League's second tightest defence last season, however, Matt Paine and now Matt Fry have both opted to continue their careers away from the Avanti Stadium.

Defensive midfeilder Paine has left after six years at the club to join former Iron skipper Kenny Davis at Boreham Wood, while centre-half Fry has decided to leave after just one season with the Iron.

In a message on his Twitter account, Fry said: "Thanks to everyone at Braintree who made last season such a memorable one especially the fans who were small in numbers but big at heart.

"I will miss the club but have decided to move on but best of luck to all the boys and the new manager.

"I know you're in good hands."

Fry hasn't announced yet where he is heading but he may link up with former Braintree boss Danny Cowley - the man who brought him to the Iron - at his new club, Lincoln City.

Paine - last season's Supporters' Player-of-the-Year - meanwhile, said the chance to pursue coaching possibilities with Boreham Wood was part of the reason behind his decision to move on.

He said: "Having given my future playing career a great deal of thought over the last few weeks I have finally decided to accept a new footballing challenge at Boreham Wood.

"In addition to continue playing the game I have been offered the chance to work within the football academy.

"This will prepare me for a possible coaching role, within the game, when my playing days are over.

"I have had a fantastic time at Braintree and have had great enjoyment playing with such committed players who have given the club 150 per cent week-in week-out.

"The support from the management, coaching staff and all associated with the club has been first class.

"This, I feel, is the right time for a change, for a new challenge to continue my hunger to play to the best of my ability."
