Braintree Town's players are likely to have to decide quickly whether or not they want to be a part of new manager Jamie Day's plans next year.

Day was handed the Iron's managerial reins on Saturday following the departure of Danny Cowley and the new man has hit the ground running as he makes plans for his first Vanarama National League campaign in charge.

The former Welling boss said the priority in the opening days of his tenure is to speak with each member of the Braintree squad about staying on for next year.

Day is keen to get as many of the players who led the team to third in the league last year to stay as he can, but he knows time isn't on his side and he will have to act quickly in forming his squad.

He said: "I've been speaking to them over the weekend and will probably give them a week to have a look at it.

"That will give them an opportunity to speak to their families and after that week, we need to either move on and get other players or get the deals done.

"Fortunately I know most of them so I'll be honest and tell them how it is with what we can and can't offer and it's then down to them to make a decision.

"Hopefully we'll keep the bulk of them but if we don't then we'll have to move on and look forward.

"Speaking to the players will give me a proper gauge of where we're at.

"I don't want to come in and rip the squad up as they've done exceptionally well.

"I want to keep a really strong base and just add to that.

"But that will all become clearer once I've had conversations with the boys about what they want to do and going forward to next year."
