Jamie Day wants to harness Braintree Town's greatest strengths after taking over as Iron manager.

The 36-year-old former Welling United boss and Forest Green Rovers assistant has spoken exclusively to the Braintree and Witham Times after being appointed as the successor to Danny Cowley at the Avanti Stadium today.

With an extensive knowledge of the Vanarama National League and what it takes to get success on a limited budget in that division, his appointment could prove to be a shrewd one by the Iron board.

While he was part of a management team that had a sizeable budget to play with at Forest Green last year, he saw considerable success at Welling on more restricted resources and his new club will be hoping that he can do the same again.

Day knows it will be a big ask to repeat last year's third-place finish, but he is also well aware of the strengths inherent in Braintree Town and wants to make use of them as he builds his squad.

"Whenever I've come up against Braintree, you always know they're a tough team to face," said Day, who also faced the Iron as a player as well as a manager in the National League.

"The boys who wear Braintree shirts always give 100 per cent.

"They might sometimes not have the technical ability of some of the top clubs but they make up for that with work rate and a willingness to win games and dig in for each other.

"I don't want to lose that.

"I want that here as it's a real strength for this club.

"And when we do recruit, we need to make sure those boys fit in to how this club is run and how the fans want the players to play on the pitch.

"I definitely don't want to change the work ethic that's here with the players.

"That and team spirit are massively important.

"That's especially the case when you go to some of the clubs in this league and you need to have that.

"I do like to play attacking football and get the ball on the floor and play.

"I like winning games and that's something that we obviously need to do.

"It will be a fast-tempo play where we'll press where we need to press and drop off when we need to.

"We will be organised, which is what you need to be at this level.

"Hopefully we'll see an attacking team that can roll its sleeves up when it is needed."
