The individual glory of scoring the decisive goals that have earned Braintree Town wins in their last two Vanarama National League games has been an apt reward for Mitch Brundle, according to boss Danny Cowley.

Having got the Iron’s third goal in their 3-2 win at Gateshead, Brundle popped up with the final – and winning – goal again as they triumphed by the same scoreline at Wrexham.

And Cowley was quick to lavish praise on a player who he admits has suffered through his own versatility this season.

“It was a fantastic goal from Mitch (at Wrexham),” said Cowley.

“I said to him from the beginning of the season that I knew he had goals in him.

“We watched a lot of the games from last year and we could see that.

“It’s probably been my fault that he’s been underused and probably misused.

“Mitch is such a versatile player and he can play in so many positions that you use him in a variety of different areas and while he does such a good job for the team, it can be to the detriment of the individual.

“Since he’s been back in the middle, which is his best position, he’s been fantastic and I’m pleased for him because he’s such a team player.

“He’s so willing to put the team before himself and it’s always nice when your team players get a bit of individual glory.”

Brundle’s 81st minute goal was added to the two in the first half by striker Michael Cheek that earned Braintree an invaluable three points in Wales.

Those points kept the Iron fifth in the table – in the play-off positions – ahead of the final game of the season against Altrincham at the Avanti Stadium on Saturday.

And with Eastleigh losing against Tranmere, Braintree know they now need just a point from their last game of the regular campaign to be sure of a top-five finish.
