A single goal apiece was enough to break the FA Cup dreams of both STANWAY ROVERS and WITHAM TOWN.

Rovers were hosting Ryman League premier division side Staines Town at the Hawthorns in their second qualifying round tie, but were unable to perform another feat of giantkilling.

In the end, it was a single goal that ended Stanway’s progress.

It came right on the stroke of half-time as Staines striker Pat Cox found the target and proved to be the difference between the two teams.

There was also no further progress in the competition for Garry Kimble’s Witham Town team.

They had travelled to Norfolk to face Evo-Stick Southern League premier division side King’s Lynn Town, who were cheered on at the Walks Stadium by the majority of a crowd of 571.

And it was the home supporters who went away the happiest as the Linnets booked their place in the third qualifying round with another first-half goal.

Just like at Stanway it proved to be the decisive strike of the game as Michael Clunan slammed home a penalty in the 16th minute to secure his team’s progress.
