Braintree Town may be battling up alongside the Vanarama National League promotion big-hitters but manager Danny Cowley is still keen to make sure no-one is getting carried away by his team’s success.

The Iron’s 2-1 win against Woking on Tuesday saw them leapfrog their high-flying opponents into the top-five in the table and into National League’s play-off places for the first time since Cowley took charge as manager last summer.

Second-half goals from Simeon Akinola and Michael Cheek brought a victory that extended Braintree’s unbeaten run to five games and means they have lost just once in their last ten.

They will be hoping to extend that superb run further when they host National League new boys Guiseley tomorrow and another three-point haul could potentially place the Iron in the top three of the table by the end of the day.

However, Cowley knows his team are only just over a quarter of the way through the campaign so is keen that fans and and his players stay focused and don’t allow thoughts of play-offs or promotion to derail them.

The Braintree boss said: “The win against Woking has moved us up the table but nobody is getting carried away with this our fifth game unbeaten and we’ll all be keeping our feet firmly on the ground.

“We have another hard game at home to Guiseley on Saturday and that’s what we are now concentrating on.”

Meanwhile, there was a goal for Charlie Strutton on his return to Braintree action when the Iron hosted Billericay Town in a friendly match in midweek.

It was a chance for Cowley to give game-time to some of his squad members and ended with the hosts running out 7-1 winners against their Ryman League premier division opponents.

Strutton, who has been on loan at Hayes and Yeading, returned to Braintree colours as part of his comeback from ankle surgery earlier this year and he tucked away a 39th minute penalty as one of five first-half goals.

Jordon Cox impressed with a hat-trick, while Taylor Miles scored from a free-kick, Anthony Edgar also scored and Braintree Town Academy player Alfie Walker was also on target.

There were also run-outs for first-team players Joe Maybanks and Jeremy Walker and Brentford loanee Daniel O'Shaugnessy.
