Witham Cricket Club will head into one of the most significant games in their history sitting top of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship.

However, Leroy Facey feels they will still be the under dogs as they host second-placed Sudbury in a game that could decide where the division one honours go this year.

A nine-wicket win against Worlington last weekend, coupled with Sudbury’s loss to Wivenhoe, left Witham sitting top of the pile by two points ahead of the showdown between the top pair at the Park today.

Facey said he thought it was the first time in Witham’s history that they had been at the summit, but even though they lead the way, he still thinks Sudbury’s playing resources will make the Suffolk side the favourites.

He said: “We were sitting having a beer after the game when one of the younger guys came in and said Sudbury had lost.

“We couldn’t quite believe it.

“We were happy because we knew that put us a couple of points above them and we enjoyed the moment, but it only lasted a couple of minutes because we know what we still have to do.

“Two points is nothing at all to be honest.

“We are top but that doesn’t bring anything else to the situation.

“Week by week, we are loving just going out and playing and going top doesn’t make that much difference.

“Looking at the grand scheme of things and we are not under any pressure because we aren’t expected to win the league.

“We still consider ourselves as underdogs.

“We give ourselves that title as we seem to thrive on the tag.

“That’s not to say the guys go out expecting to lose, but against the bigger teams with their bigger resources, I think there is that feeling of being the underdog.

“All the pressure is on Sudbury.

“They have the resources and they use them.

“They are expected to beat us and are very keen to get back into the Premier League, while we are just loving playing cricket.”
