Silver End Bowls Club’s players have bounced back from the disappointment of another area final defeat in the national Top Club competition by booking their places in a number of county and North West Essex League finals.

A 3-2 defeat by Essex County Bowls Club in the Essex Area Final of the National Top Club was the third time that Silver End had lost at this stage to the same club, however, they have responded with some good performances.

John Martin made it three appearances in the Secretaries’ Cup final with a 21-7 win against Trevor Gosling from Arclight.

Martin has won it twice previously and this year’s final will be played at Braintree Bowls Club on September 13.

In the North West Essex finals, which be held at Elsenham also on September 13, Silver End have players in all four finals.

In the Champion of Champions, Karl Lodge will play Russell Harmour from Halstead, while the Open Singles will see Adrian Papple play Martin Spencer from Dunmow.

Papple and Lodge will then team up in the pairs final to face Malcolm Stark and Chris Long from Braintree and in the triples final, Paul Mann, Lodge and Papple will have a showdown against their Silver End club-mates Roy Howard, Ray Everitt and Ray Marshall.

In the North West Essex League, Silver End A have an almost unassailable lead in division A and are favourites to meet the winners of the northern section in the play-off final.

Only an 8-0 defeat and an 8-0 win for Bocking A, with a huge swing in shot difference, could stop them.

Silver End B remain mid-table in division B, while Silver End C have a battle to avoid finishing bottom of division C.
