Leroy Facey admits that the mentality of Witham Cricket Club’s players has changed as their success has continued to build this season.

While they are trying to play down talk of pushing for the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship title, Witham have placed themselves in a great position.

With just five games to go and ahead of today’s home game against Worlington, they are lying second and just 12 points behind leaders Sudbury after winning six games in a row.

The latest of those was a 73-run win at Wivenhoe last weekend, but talk at the Park isn’t about winning the league as their players focus on the job in hand.

“We just have to carry on playing good cricket,” said Facey, who hit 61 in Witham’s win at Wivenhoe.

“We know that we can win the league, but it really is just one game at a time that we are taking it.

“We’re just trying to keep enjoying playing good cricket.

“After a couple of beers on a Saturday night, we’ll have a quick word about winning the title, but that’s quickly dismissed because we can’t allow thoughts to go there.

“We have been having such a good season, but we didn’t plan to be near the top of the league.

“Nobody expected this from us and we have to stay as we are until the end of the season.

“Admittedly we know we have Sudbury coming up in a couple of weeks, but we have to keep the focus on each week as it comes."
