Strong podium finishes at the fifth round moved Cressing karting ace Tyrone Stansfield hot on to the heels of the leaders of the Easykart British Cadet Championship title race.

The 13-year-old built on the double victory he had at the previous round in Dorset as another pre-final win and a second spot in the final at Glan Y Gors in North Wales moved the Alec Hunter Academy pupil to within six points of the series leader.

Stansfield, who is sponsored by G & B Finch of Great Leighs and K & B Tatam of Maldon, qualified third for the opening heat, but made up another place to finish second and was just 0.079 seconds behind first spot.

That meant he started the pre-final in second and, having made a bold move to take the lead, raced on to finish just under half a second clear at the chequered flag for a result that would place him on pole position for the final.

However, a kart stuck on track at the start of the final meant three rolling laps to begin the race and, as pace setter, Stansfield was unable to accelerate, meaning that his engine got clogged and he dropped back to fifth once the action really got under way. His pace did show as the race developed, though, and the Cressing youngster recovered to set the day’s fastest lap and moved up into second by the finish for more valuable championship points.

Stansfield is third in the overall standings ahead of the next round at Whilton Mill in Northampton in September.
