Braintree Bowmen youngsters Imogen Newby and Sydney Strugnell brought home a one-two for the club from the Southern Counties Junior FITA Championships in Colchester.

And an added bonus for Strugnell saw her achievements earn her a debut Essex County call-up for a match against Oxfordshire at the start of August.

Their path to glory at Colchester wasn’t a smooth path, though.

A serious problem with the arrow rest arm on her bow meant Newby, who was fresh from a double silver at the national championships the previous weekend, faced an uphill battle as her sight marks were badly affected.

She was unable to record the scores she knew she was capable of, but ended the Metric V round with a score of 1,340 for the gold medal.

Strugnell, meanwhile, also overcame a problem with setting her sights and a strong finish saw her not only bag silver with a score of 1,292 and secure a county call-up but she also claimed a Purple Cross Badge after passing the 1,275-point mark.
