Triple and long jump athletes from Braintree and District Athletic Club had an excellent weekend at the Essex AAA Championships at Chelmsford Arena.

Richard Shingleton and his brother Charlie started with their under-20 men's long jump and both cleared the six-metre mark.

However, Richard came off best with a season’s best jump of 6.27m to take the silver medal, while Charlie claimed bronze with 6.11m.

Ryan Morgan is competing in his first year in the under-17s and made the final with a personal best (PB) jump of 5.79m for fifth place.

Later in the day, though, it turned into a golden weekend for Charlie Shingleton and Ryan Morgan.

Charlie claimed the under-20 men’s triple jump gold medal and Morgan took the under-17 men’s triple jump gold with another new PB.

In her first ever outing as a triple jumper, Melissa Gurteen, had a very close contest against the eventual winner and claimed under-15 girls’ silver with a leap of 9.78m.

Their performances mean all of the Braintree athletes have now gained an automatic place in the Essex AAA team in this season’s forthcoming Inter-Counties Championships.
