High handicappers stole the show in the weekend stableford competitions at Braintree Golf Club, with Adam Marsh leading the way.

The 22-handicapper won the Sunday event with 39 points, four ahead of James Bussell (6) and Robert Jiggins (12), with Bussell taking second spot on countback.

The Saturday competition saw Iain Lucey come out on top with 37 points off an 18 handicap.

Graham Milligan (28) edged out Terry Barke (12), on countback, after both signed for 36 points.

Andy Little, John Stone and Gordon Hewitt won the seniors’ Texas Scramble with 63.6 ahead of Steve Allen, Graham Pickering and Mike Saffill with 65.

Third were Phill Townsend, Mike Ellis and Roy Childs on 65.3, while John Snow won the nearest the pin prize on the tenth hole.

Meanwhile, Braintree’s Seniors – led by this year’s captain, Jim Rowe – kicked off their inter-club season with a 7-1 home win against Clacton.

The pairings of Allen and Derek Adams and Terry Barke and Saffill recorded seven and six wins while Ray Jenkyn and Mike Snell won five and three.

Townsend and Hewitt got home five and four and Jim Rowe and Len Grindal won four and three while the combinations of Little and Paul Vale and Ken Rowe and Snow both won two up.

Braintree’s only setback was suffered by Stone and Mike Collard, who lost one down.

The prize for nearest the pin on the tenth hole was won by Townsend.
