Charlie Strutton was delighted to not only get his first start since signing permanently for Braintree Town but also to find the back of the net in their 1-0 Vanarama Conference Premier win against Wrexham.

Strutton’s strike ended 620 minutes of league football without a goal for the Iron and their win followed ten Conference Premier games without a victory.

Strutton said: “It was a massive three points and we really needed it as we’d been on a bad run.

“We could have been another couple ahead and we definitely deserved it as we were the better team.

“They put a bit of pressure on but they never really looked like scoring.

“So I think we deserved the three points.”

That was a view echoed by Iron boss Alan Devonshire, who was pleased to see Strutton get his first start after the striker broke his leg while an AFC Wimbledon player on loan at Aldershot last season.

Devonshire said: “It was Charlie’s first start after he had a bad injury and I don’t think people realise just how bad it was.

“It’s easy for people to say to chuck him in but it has to be right for Charlie – not Braintree, for Charlie.

“It’s his career and I was so pleased for him to get the goal.

“He was always going to get 70 minutes and then come off.

“People don’t realise that, but it’s how we work.

“If people are carrying injuries then we decide beforehand as looking after my players is my main priority.

“I’m just delighted for the whole club as we deserved that.”
