BRAINTREE TOWN 0 CHESTERFIELD 6

FA Cup first round proper

Braintree Town’s dreams of making it into the second round of the FA Cup must wait for another year at least.

Despite three previous appearances in the first round proper, the Iron have never progressed beyond it and Chesterfield became the latest Football League club to deny them a first-ever second-round appearance.

In the end, it was a straightforward win for the Spireites as the gulf between part-time Conference and full-time Football League was more than apparent.

Neither side brought strong form into the game, with Chesterfield without a win in six League One starts and Braintree winless in ten Conference Premier attempts.

However, the visitors were never going to lose this one.

Two goals from Eoin Doyle, one apiece for Jay O'Shea, Gary Roberts and Sam Clucas and an own goal made it straightforward progress for the Football League club.

Simeon Akinola was most impressive for Braintree and had a curling effort cleared off the line late on while Spireites keeper Tommy Lee made a great save from Jordan Cox, but it was one to forget for the Iron.
