Braintree Town chairman Lee Harding rates their 3-2 win at Luton Town as one of the best results in the club’s history.

The Iron came into the Blue Square Bet Premier fixture on the back of seven games without a win and having seen a 2-0 lead transformed into a 3-2 defeat by Barrow in their previous outing.

They were facing a side who had graced the top flight of the Football League not so long ago, but goals from Dan Holman, Sean Marks and Matt Paine secured a place in the club’s history books.

“It emphasises the fact that football is a funny old game,” said Harding.

“In some of our recent games, we haven’t been getting the results we have deserved, but we did in this one and you’ve got to be pleased for the players and particularly (manager) Alan (Devonshire).

“It takes some pressure off when you can go somewhere like that and get a result.

“There won’t be many sides now looking forward to playing a team that has just gone to Luton and got a result.

“Make no mistake, Luton are a good side.

“They get attendances that average ten times ours and have a playing budget that is considerably higher than what Alan has to work with.

“We were heavily touted as underdogs by the bookmakers so to go there and win was fantastic.

“Having led 2-0 and with it poised at 2-2 at half-time, I spoke with one of my colleagues in the boadroom and we agreed that the following 45 minutes could be important for our season.

“So it was great to see the lads roll their sleeves up and there were a lot of eight out of ten performances out there.

“Adam Bailey-Dennis has had to take a fair bit of criticism in recent weeks, but he was a man mountain out there at Luton and arguably our man-of-the-match.

“I was just really pleased for the lads.

“It’s got to be up there with the best results ever for the club.

“The home game against Grimsby at the start of last season when they came to us expecting to give us a whipping and left with a 5-0 defeat was pretty special, but to go and beat a team like Luton on their own patch is definitely up there.

“But we deserved it.”
