TILBURY 2 WITHAM TOWN 1
Ryman League division one north

WITHAM suffered a second defeat in four days as they continue to find that the going can be tough in this league.

They fought well again, but after taking the lead, they gave away a soft goal in a moment of madness when keeper Danny Sambridge gave away a penalty that won the game for the hosts.

Tilbury started well and Sambridge made an excellent save from Danny Francis.

But there was little to choose between the sides as home keeper James Marrable made saves from Scott Pethers and Rhys Darg, while at the other end, the Dockers hit the post just before half-time.

Witham had the stiff breeze behind them after the break and attacked the home goal.

They took the lead after 51 minutes when Rob Whitnell headed powerfully in from a corner.

Soon afterwards, Danny Lopez was unlucky when his shot somehow failed to cross the line after Marrable had lost the ball.

However, just as it looked like a win was on the cards for Witham, Joe Nightingill shot through a crowded goalmouth following a hotly-disputed free-kick to equalise.

But worse was to come as Sambridge then upended a home forward, for which the Witham man received a yellow card, and Joel Barnett stepped forward to win the game with a well-taken penalty.

Witham: Danny Sambridge, Scott Pethers (Billy Hunt), Seb Murfet, Tom Devaux, Bradley Stopher, James Stevens, Danny Emmanuel, Lewis Godbold, Rob Whitnell, Rhys Darg, Danny Lopez, Subs not used: Joe Pearman, Sam Taylor. Man-of-the-match: Rob Whitnell.
