Braintree Town manager Alan Devonshire took the positives out of a disappointing display on the opening day of the season.

Brad Quinton's 90th minute goal allowed the Iron to snatch a late point against Blue Square Bet Premier new boys Hyde at the Amlin Stadium.

But they did it the hard way after a poor opening spell that saw them trailing 2-0 at half-time.

The sending-off of Hyde's Andrew Pearson during the half-time break - for an altercation with Braintree's Dean Wells in the tunnel as the players left the pitch - saw the visitors reduced to ten men.

That helped Braintree somewhat and they looked far livelier in the second half.

Substitute Kane Sheppard scored within three minutes of coming on at the start of the half, but Braintree had to patient to get the equaliser.

They were totally dominant in the second period, but just as it seemed Hyde would hold on to their slender lead, Quinton headed in from a corner in time added-on to grab a point.

Devonshire said: “We are a point better off than last year, because we went to Darlington and lost 1-0 there on the opening day.

“We know we didn’t play well in this game, but, after being 2-0 down, I’ll take a point.

“They (Hyde) did what we did last year and they played really well.

“You have to give them credit for that, but we got a point and I’m happy with that.”
