Josh Dawkin wants Braintree Town to be a springboard back into the Football League.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Iron ahead of their opening pre-season friendly at Long Melford on Saturday after being released by Norwich City at the end of last season.

Dawkin made an instant impact with two goals in a 10-0 win at Melford and the former Welsh under-19 player is hoping to put himself in the shop window with Braintree in the Blue Square Bet Premier this year.

In fact, he admitted that the way Iron players have earned full-time deals and moves to Football League clubs in recent months was a big factor in his decision to come to the Amlin Stadium.

He said: “I want to get back in there (the Football League) as quickly as possible.

"Dev (manager Alan Devonshire) convinced me to come here because recently he has got quite a few players moving on to the League and full-time football.

“That was a selling point for me coming here as I obviously want to play as high as I can.

“It was disappointing to have to leave Norwich at the end of last season, but hopefully I can kickstart my career again by playing football and it will help me back into the League."
