BRAINTREE Golf Club began this year’s Leslie F Wood competition with a 10-5 win over Wanstead.
The morning foursomes started with a two and one win and by the end of the morning they were 4.5-0.5 up.
Wanstead, as expected, came out with their big guns up front in the afternoon singles, trying to create momentum for the rest of their battling team.
Braintree lost the first three singles but O’Connor, who was playing his first representative match, was a fine four and two winner to arrest the slide.
They then won the next run of matches and now play Warley Park on May 15 at Stisted.
Warley Park were impressive 12-3 winners over last year’s champions Channels GC.
