Purcell's wonder goal sinks Cards

George Purcell scored a fine goal midway through the second half as Braintree Town clinched a valuable 1-0 victory over promotion-rivals Woking.

Leading goalscorer Purcell latched on to Brad Quinton's lay-off from Ryan Peters' cross to fire a shot emphatically into the roof of the net to help extend Braintree's unbeaten league run to 11 matches.

Braintree manager Robbie Garvey said: “It was a great result for us against a good side that will be up there at the end of the season.

“Credit also to our groundsman Andy Green and his staff for getting the game on.”

The Iron dominated the first half at Cressing Road.

Mark Jones' 25-yard effort flew just over following Quinton's corner while soon after, Sean Marks' header dipped inches over, after Peters had crossed.

Purcell then shot over the bar and Braintree began to wonder at that stage whether they would rue their missed opportunities.

Tom Hutchinson headed just over for the visitors before half-time and Woking improved in the second half.

The Cards dominated possession after half-time and Ademola Moses saw his shot deflected away for a corner, following a fine run at the Iron defence.

Braintree goalkeeper Craig Holloway then saved Harry Arter's long-range effort and at that point in the game, Woking looked as likely as their hosts to break the deadlock.

But Braintree sent on substitute Reece Harris for Marks and gradually fought their way back into the game.

Purcell was unlucky to see his attempt fly just wide after beating his marker but four minutes later, turned well to fire powerfully into the net and give Iron a precious lead.

Woking pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing minutes but the Braintree defence held out for a fine win.
