Kevin Hawes will spearhead Witham Town’s promotion push in the Essex Senior League next season.
The striker has returned to Spa Road for another spell after agreeing to join Town from AFC Sudbury.
Witham boss Danny Greaves wants to partner him with another former Witham player, Nicky Love, who played for the club briefly in the Ryman League last season.
And Greaves is delighted to bring both players back to Town.
He told the Times: “Kevin has agreed to rejoin us.
“It’s a big boost because he’s a wonderful talent.
“He scores goals but not only that, he’s a good player.
“I watched him play for AFC Sudbury two or three times last season and you could tell that he can play.
“He’s agreed to come and help the club for a season and we’ve put a package together for him.
“I’m hoping to pair him up with Nicky Love, who was at the club briefly before.
“I’m looking forward to them both being with us next season.
“With no disrespect to anyone else, the one thing we lacked last season was a 20-goal a season man in our side.
“I believe that with Kevin Hawes, James Robinson, Nicky Love and Tom Robinson in our side, we have four players who are capable of making and scoring goals on a regular basis.”
Witham held a get together last night (Tuesday) and will begin pre-season training tomorrow.
Town have kept the majority of their squad together for the coming season, despite their relegation from Ryman League division one north last season.
Both Steve Joyce and James Robinson – who is currently in Australia – have committed themselves for next season and boss Greaves has not ruled out further signings, as he looks to build a squad capable of winning promotion from the Essex Senior League at the first attempt.
He said: “The relegation is now history.
“We have to look forward as a football club.
“We will be going to different grounds and different clubs and in that respect, it will be interesting.
“And we will have a chance of doing well in the FA Vase.
“If everyone who has agreed to sign has signed, the good thing is that we will have a 16 or 17-man squad.
“Last season, we had far too many personnel and there were too many changes disrupting the team.”
Goalkeeper Rhys Madden has left Witham but Greaves has not ruled out him returning during pre-season.
“I will speak to Rhys and we’re leaving our options open,” he added.
“We may have to start the season with a loan goalkeeper and that’s something we’re pursuing.”
