Braintree Rays suffered a heavy 26-2 defeat against county rivals Essex Archers.
However, the one-sided scoreline did not reflect the impressive performances by the Rays.
Secretary and general manager Justin Davis said: “While the result was not ideal, the team showed great commitment throughout.
“It was an ideal opportunity to try out several players in different positions and this should bode well for the remainder of the season.”
With the Rays unable to field a recognised experienced pitcher, the game against a strong side was always going to be tough.
And so it proved, as the Archers ran out worthy winners.
Strong hitting combined with errors in fielding ensured the Archers built up an impressive lead, which Braintree could not get close to.
The commitment of the Rays was impressive, as they struggled to get players on base.
Strong pitching from the Archers reduced the Rays’ chances to dent the score.
With a strong squad representing Braintree, it represented an ideal time to try out a number of players in different positions and gain valuable game experience.
The Rays managed to score two consolation runs later in the game.
However, at the end of the seventh inning, the mercy rule was enforced, meaning a final score of 26-2 to Essex Archers.
Despite the heavy loss, the Rays’ team spirit stayed intact and is something that will hold them in good stead for the remainder of the season.
The team have a strong roster and can move forward into the rest of the season with confidence and put this result behind them.
Braintree Rays will be looking to bounce back from this defeat with their next game against Old Timers on Sunday.
