Braintree Rays lost a close encounter 17-15 against the Southampton Mustangs, to end their good recent winning form.
The game started in glorious sunshine as the Rays looked to build on their impressive start to the season and both sides were confident of a tight, closely-fought game.
Both teams started brightly with the score 6-3 to the Rays after the first inning.
However, it remained tight with each side batting and pitching well, with the score 8-5 in the Rays’ favour after five innings.
Braintree made wholesale changes to the team, with several players looking to get in the game, and as the Rays lost momentum the Mustangs took advantage superbly.
After several close innings, the Mustangs scored seven runs in two innings and gained the significant lead late in the game. Despite a home run from Steve May in the seventh inning, the Rays couldn’t peg back their opponents and will be disappointed with the end result.
With the result tied at 14-14 going into the ninth inning, the Mustangs added three runs and it proved crucial as the Rays could only pull one run back, losing the game 17-15.
The end result ensured a well-deserved win for Southampton, with some harsh lessons for Braintree Rays.
The Rays will look to bounce back from this defeat with their next game on Sunday against Bracknell Blazers.
