SKIPPER Jake Wakelin says he is proud to lead a Witham cricket team that is rewriting the club's record books.

With a seven-wicket win against Maldon last weekend, Wakelin's team made it an impressive ten Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship wins in row and made sure that they secured a top two finish behind newly-crowned division one champions Worlington.

That league finish matches the highest that the club has ever had and Wakelin said they believe their ten consecutive victories to be unrivalled in the club's history.

"It was another good performance all round at Maldon," said Wakelin.

"We just have that ruthless streak at the moment and it was great to make it ten wins in a row to secure second spot.

"We are pretty confident that ten wins is a club first-team record and making sure of that second place is good.

"It's a great achievement from the boys.

"We finished second a few years ago and to do that again is great from the lads.

"We did struggle a bit more last year, but we have got ourselves back up there to challenge and I'm proud to captain such a great Witham side."

Witham will now look to close out their impressive second half to the season by claiming an 11th straight win when they head to Ipswich on the final day of the campaign.

However, with Ipswich's position in division one not safe and the hosts having plenty to play for, Wakelin knows his team will have to be on song to keep their run going.

He added: "With 12 teams in division one, going 11 games straight would mean we've gone through an entire half of the season winning every game and that's something to play for in itself.

"However, Ipswich still have something to play for so we can't be complacent.

"We may give a few players opportunities for first-team experience, but we will be going there to win and round the season off in style.

"Having a run of 11 back-to-back wins to finish the season would be very impressive."
