Captain Jake Wakelin said Witham Cricket Club's win at Maldon showed that their superb current form is an all-round effort from the team.

Witham's seven-wicket win not only ensured them a top-two finish in Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one, but extended their winning sequence to an astonishing ten games.

It has been a phenomenal run by Wakelin's side and it's not one that has relied on one star player, with their win at Maldon once again seeing duties spread throughout the first-team side.

Greg Stephens starred with the ball as he took four for 23, but Wakelin and Cody McDonald claimed two wickets apiece as well as having Shaun Bragg bowling an excellent early spell as Maldon were all out for 131.

Witham did lost Michael Godwin early on in their reply, but Wakelin smashed 83 from 63 balls at the top of the order and led the charge as they got past their target with just three wickets down in 20 overs.

The Witham skipper said: "Maldon have been a bit of a bogey side for us, but our performance was spot-on again and we dominated the match.

"We aren't relying on the same batter or the same bowler each week and duties are being spread around, which is very impressive.

"Shaun Bragg set the tone with a key wicket (of Chris Harris) in the first over and he and Cody McDonald bowled with superb control at the start.

"They compliment each other so well and when the spinners come on, it lets us bowl at batters who have to be more aggressive against us.

"We were then able to get into the Maldon middle order, with Greg (Stephens) picking up four wickets and I got two.

"We kept them to 131 where we felt over 200 was par on that wicket and although we did lose Michael Godwin early on, we never felt a win was in any danger.

"I felt in good touch and James Smith batted nicely and the only shame was that we both went late on, but to get the total in 20 overs was impressive.

"We came into the game knowing that Maldon could still have pipped us for second place in the league and we didn't want that to happen, so to win like we did was excellent."
