MANAGER Brad Quinton said his Braintree Town players would be put through their paces at set pieces at training this week after seeing them beaten by Wrexham.

The Iron were still bottom of the Vanarama National League table after a 1-0 loss at Cressing Road that came when Wrexham skipper Shaun Pearson headed home from a corner.

Quinton admitted that it was another frustrating result to take as his team competed well over the 90 minutes but, once again, were made to pay for individual errors.

“It’s tough to take when you’re in a position like we are,” he said.

“It’s disappointing and gutting to see.

“We battled well, but we gave away a corner where we overplayed when we didn’t need to and then our player gets blocked out at the corner to allow them to get in and score.

“That’s so annoying for myself.

“It’s very frustrating that errors by individuals are costing us and people need to look at themselves in the mirror.

“I don’t know what else I have to say to some of these youngsters because they need to listen and learn fast at this level because it’s a cruel world.

“The opposition we’re coming up against are organised because they’re together every day and they don’t get beaten through the middle.

“But they get a set piece and they come alive; that’s where we’re getting punished.

“It’s a tough one to take.”

Quinton knows a lack of goals at the other end of the pitch is also hurting his team’s chances, but added that practice with defending set pieces would be on the agenda at training this week.

He said: “We need to get the ball in the back of the net and I think when that comes – and I know I keep saying it – it’s going to make us better.

“But I can’t fault the players’ spirit because they’re going right the way to the end and they’re battling.

“I appreciate that from all of them but, as an ex-player, I expect that.

“If you don’t put up a fight that makes me very angry but I haven’t seen that.

“So we we’ll go again and train hard in the week.

“We’ll probably work for two hours on defending corners and free-kicks so they’ll probably get a headache from heading it all the time.

“But we’ll keep working hard, keep believing and that result will come.”
