Braintree Town manager Brad Quinton said his team didn’t play enough of the type of football he wants to see from them on another tough day in the Vanarama National League.

The Iron were left still winless after six games of the season after a 2-0 defeat by Maidenhead United at Cressing Road and Quinton was disappointed with what he saw from his side.

He wants them to get the ball on the floor and pass it in the style that brought them success in National League South last year, but is frustrated that that isn’t happening enough.

He said: "We didn't play enough football if you want my honest opinion.

"We were playing into their hands too much and we made it easy for them to deal with it.

"We wanted to get on the ball more, get it on the deck and start passing between the two centre halves to bring them out of their areas to try to get in behind them.

"We maybe overplayed a bit, but you have to hang in there.”

Braintree did have sizeable spells in the game when they dominated possession against the Magpies, but they were unable to turn that into goals and Quinton said he saw heads go down at times.

He added: "As an ex-player, I know that when you are down near the bottom and you don't take your chances you're left thinking 'oh, here we go again'.

"It was the same things again that have cost us and that's disappointing.

"When you are down the bottom, you need a bit of luck and we're not getting any at this moment in time.

"You can point a bit to personnel and confidence.

"There are a few people who, when chances are not taken or mistakes are made and the pressure is on, tend to hide.

"There are players who haven't been at this level before and you get punished in the National League.

"So it's hard but we have to try and pick them up.

"But there were some positives.

"We never gave up and we kept plugging away and passing the ball in the final third.

"But they (Maidenhead) had the mentality that the game was won at two-nil and it's hard when you're down the bottom.

"You need that bit of a break and that's what we didn't get.

"It's obviously a good result for Maidenhead and we go again at Boreham Wood on Saturday.

"It's a lovely surface there so we'll look to get the ball down and pass there and hopefully hit the back of the net.”
