DAVE Davenport turned in an exemplary performance to win the Veterans Cup at Braintree Golf Club.

Playing off a 19 handicap, he compiled 41 Stableford points, finishing four ahead of the rest of the field.

A countback was needed on 37 points to decide the other places with Arthur Turner (11) securing second spot ahead of Jeff Rycroft (13), Stewart Gason (24) and Trevor Green (13).

Another fine display came in the ladies’ Betty Boucher competition with Margaret Margetts posting a nett 66 off a handicap of 24.

She finished one ahead of Liz Karn (31) with Sue Mitchell (22) third on nett 68.

The Junior Monthly Stableford also produced good scores with Liam Walsh, off 17, winning with 39 points, two ahead of runner-up Alasdair Groves (10) with Callum Chamberlain (12) third on 36.

Meanwhile, the men’s Midweek Stableford saw Richard Moffat post 40 points off 13 handicap.

John Bradford, playing off plus-3, was second with 39 while Tom McGee (4) was third with 38.

In the men’s nine-hole Stableford competition, David Atterbury (14) won with 20 points, finishing three ahead of Richard Townrow (6), who edged out Michael Banthorpe (11) on countback with John Peters (13) fourth with 16.

For the ladies, Tricia Stallwood (15) returned 22 points, one better than runner-up Anne Townrow (14).

The senior men visited Chelmsford and were beaten 6½-1½ while they also tasted defeat at Harwich 5½-2½.
