JOHN Bradford proved a worthy winner of the Braintree Club Championship after another solid display in the second leg of the event on Sunday.

Having shown solid form in recent weeks, the plus-one handicapper followed up his previous week’s 65 with 70 for a five-under-par tally of 135.

He finished eight strokes clear of his nearest rivals James Hedger and Martin Hawes.

Hedger improved on his opening 75 with 68 for 143, while Hawes followed up his previous week’s 71 with 72.

Two more players finished in fourth and fifth places on 148, Jonathan Earl with 75, while Charlie Nibbs failed to find the form of his opening 68 by returning 80.

The Taylor Bowl, which is the net competition played alongside the Club Championship, saw Ashley Tate (7) return a superb 64, while James Hedger (2) finished runner-up again with a net 66.

Three players signed for net 69s - Duncan Patmore (10), Mark Leckie (9) and Angus Neilson (9).

Meanwhile, the Junior Monthly Medal proved a resounding success for Liam Walsh, who returned a net 66 off a handicap of 18.

In midweek, the ladies’ Coronation Foursomes was won by Marian Ballard and Jenny Humphries with 38 points.

In a closely-fought event, Carol Mehrer and Brenda Young finished with 37 while Eva Kajsa Bolland and Julie Race were third with 36.

Desmond Wilson (16) topped the list in the men’s Midweek Stableford with 38 points, one better than John Adlam (18) while there was a countback for third place on 36 points with Alan Symington (11) getting the verdict over Derek Burrell (24).

The men’s nine-hole Stableford was won by John Stone (9) with 20 points with Michael Banthorpe (11) second with 13.

On the seniors front, Braintree gained a convincing 6-2 home victory over Ipswich before travelling to Bishop’s Stortford and sampling the firmest and quickest greens so far, suffering their first defeat in their sixth encounter of the season, going down 3½-4½.
