BRAINTREE Bowling Club's ladies had a closely-fought home match over four rinks in the County Top Club competition but were edged out by visiting Dovercourt in this prestigious Essex tournament.

In singles, pairs, triples and fours matches, ten players from each club faced each other where the total of shots would determinate the eventual winners.

Victory fell to the visitors as they won on three rinks in the singles, triples and fours, with Braintree's pairs - Olive Hawkins and Linda Butcher - being the only home winners.

The game was played in a friendly spirit on an extremely well-prepared green.

In fact due to the quality of the Braintree Bowling Club green, the Essex County Bowling Association have booked several trial and full county matches to be played there over the rest of this season.

It is a feather in the cap for the green-keeping team of volunteers who take a pride in their work and produce arguably one of the best greens in the county.
