A RETURN to wintry conditions meant no competitions were played at Braintree over the weekend but the ladies saw some action before the snow returned.

In their midweek Stableford, Caroline Fields, playing off a handicap of 18, signed for a winning score of 34 points.

She finished two ahead of Carolyn Harris (22), while there was a three-way countback for third place on 30 points with Diane Wyatt (21) getting the verdict over Pauline Haggerty (34) and Eva Kajsa Bolland (21).

Meanwhile, the club’s assistant professional Steve Hambling enjoyed a superb victory in a pro-am at Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St George’s Golf Clubs in Kent last week.

He had a round of 78 in horrendous weather, with wind and horizontal rain, at Cinque Ports, but followed that in more favourable conditions with a four-under-par 66 at St George’s.

This left him on 144 - three over par - but four shots better than his nearest rival and along with his team of Braintree members Paul Buchan, Sean Kelly and Paul Davies, they finished on 19 under to fill the runners-up spot, three behind the winners.
