ONLEY Arms secured a home win to close the gap on Essex Invitation Petanque League division two league leaders Wethersfield Jetts to two points.

They welcomed Wethersfield Hopps to their new terrain at Broomfield FC, but the hosts' David Bird, Nikki Parrish and Trevor Blows were quickly in trouble in the triples.

The visitors' Geoff Cockwell, Karen Wade and Carolyn Acland adapted well to the difficult terrain surface to open a 10-3 lead, but the hosts hit back to narrow the deficit to 11-10 heading into the final stages.

Wade played her last boule to hold two and game on the ground, but with no other option, Blows shot to remove the Hopps boules and leave the Onley holding two.

Bird then pointed in for three and a 13-11 win for the home trio.

Blows then beat Cockwell 13-7 in the singles and a 3-0 match win was secured with a 13-9 success in the pairs.

Meanwhile, Bocking Dyers travelled to Billericay Lakes and came away with a 2-1 win.

Three very close games saw them win 13-12, 10-13, 13-11 to move into third place in the league, with Trevor Turner winning the deciding singles.

Three Elms sit at the top of division one after a 2-1 win at Thorley.
