THE second round of Braintree Golf Club's Winter League produced some superb scoring.

Top spot in the four-ball better ball competition went to Paul Buchan, playing off three, and seven-handicapper Steven Blackburn, who set a tough target by amassing 46 points in the rain on Saturday.

It left the majority in action on Sunday with a hill to climb and no pairing got closer than 44 points.

Second place went to Gary Jones (5) and Paul Bragg (11) on countback from Andrew Goldsmith (8) and Mick Sutton (8).

Three more pairings signed for 43 points and after a further countback Matt Sanders (0) and Julian Pegg (9) finished fourth ahead of Peter Yarwood (7) and Trevor Hardy (7) with Mark Chamberlain (11) and Matthew Dunmore (14) in sixth spot.

The midweek ladies' stableford, the final qualifier of the year, was won by Margaret Margetts (26) with 37 points.

She finished a point ahead of Wendy Hutton (29) and Jenny Wheelhouse (24), with Hutton finishing second on countback, while Christine Turner finished fourth on 35 points.

All had their handicaps cut by one shot.
