BRAINTREE Golf Club’s Todd Clements played a significant part in England’s attempt to regain the Home Internationals at Moortown in Leeds.

After three days of closely-fought matches, England were denied by Ireland by just half a game point.

With both teams having beaten Scotland and Wales, the title hinged on a dramatic showdown in which Clements played his part in a 7½-7½ tie.

But Ireland won for a record fourth successive year with 27 game points to England’s 26½.

Over the three days of matchplay golf, foursomes and singles, Clements, the English Amateur champion, emerged with two wins, three halved games and just one defeat on his full England debut.

Meanwhile at Stisted, there were some high scores returned in the two stableford competitions over the weekend.
