KEVIN Thomson was a clear winner of the mens’ Charity Cup Order of Merit Stableford competition played in humid conditions at Braintree Golf Club.

Playing off a handicap of 11, Thomson piled up 43 points to be three clear of runner-up Gary Jones (7), while there was a countback for third on 39 points, with Philip Edwards (11) getting the verdict over Michael Ellis (16).

The ladies' Centenary Cup required a further countback, with Wendy Hutton (30) edging out Pauline Sundler (25) after both had 39 points.

Third place also needed a countback on 37 points in favour of Marlene Wilson (21) over Gay Smith (34).

There was a four-way tie on 34 points in the mens’ Midweek Stableford with Michael Steen (14) coming out on top, with Alan Mitchell (24) finishing second ahead of Graham Phillips (20) and Ian Dawes (26).

The ladies' Silver Trophy team concluded their campaign when they were beaten at Garon Park in their final match.

Meanwhile, lady vice-captain Caroline Fields has reached the last 16 of the Essex Lady Captains Society Ida Bunting knockout competition.
