TODD Clements was the talk of Braintree Golf Club after he set a course record in the opening round of the Brabazon Trophy over the testing Hotchkin layout at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.

He led the event, the English Men’s Open Stroke Play Championship, with a seven-under-par 66, a mark matched by South Africa’s Kyle McClatche in round two when Todd returned 76.

McClatche went on to win the title on 282, ten under par, while Todd finished joint 25th after closing rounds of 77 and 75 for 294.

Five players returned 40 stableford points in the weekend-long 200 Club Order of Merit event at Braintree GC.

After a countback, Angus Neilson, playing off nine, was declared the winner.

John Coules (21) finished runner-up while single figure men filled the next three places also with 40, namely Anthony Little (5), Gary Spurrier (6) and Paul Buchan (3).

Three more players posted scores of 39 and after a further countback Tim Streamer (9) finished sixth ahead of Michael Groves (5) and Gary Jones (8).

The Junior Monthly Medal was won by Alasdair Groves (14) with a nett 69 with Liam Walsh (22) runner-up, after a nett 76.

The Junior Monthly Reds saw Aaron Fugeman (31) win with a nett 67 ahead of William Farrow (30), on 83.

The ladies midweek Stableford brought victory for Anne Gisby (21) with 43 points.

She finished five ahead of Julie Race (9), with Margaret Margetts (26) third with 37.

The men’s midweek Stableford resulted in victory for Keith Otter (13) with 37 points, four ahead of runner-up Roger Prowling (13) with Brian Chase (13) third with 31.
