ALTHOUGH kinder conditions favoured those playing on Saturday, it was Steve Voller who came out on top in the two-day Cameron Cup at Braintree Golf Club.

Voller, playing off 14, gave it his Sunday best to return a net 67 despite a sharp easterly wind blowing across the Stisted course.

He finished a shot ahead of David Brooks (14) and Barry Buchanan (15), with Brooks taking second on countback.

Another countback on 69 was needed to decide fourth place with Michael Latta (8) coming out on top ahead of Robert Potter (12) and Richard Hall (14).

The ladies' Saturday Stableford was won by Karen Whale (21) with 29 points with Diane Nicklin (36) finishing second with 22.

The ladies Stisted Park fourball betterball competition was won by Diana Reeve (14) and Janet Jenkyn (24) with a net 68.

They finished a stroke ahead of Sue Mitchell (19) and Jenny Wheelhouse (21), while Caroline Fields (17) and Judith Owens (27) took third on countback with 70, ahead of Sue Scott (18) and Valda Curtis (23).

Braintree’s immediate past captain, Kevin Smith, has been reflecting on raising £16,769 for charity during his 12-month term of office.

Kevin, who was succeeded by new skipper Brian Day two weeks ago, chose PARC, as his charity - a Play and Resource Centre in Braintree, which supports over 500 families.

He said: “At the start of my year as captain I asked for members’ help to raise £7,500, which would completely refurbish the soft play area at PARC, a target which I thought we might reach.

“However, after an amazing 12 months of fundraising it has been a vintage year.

"Even the people at PARC have never seen anything quite like it and have been astonished by our members’ amazing generosity.

“No words will ever adequately convey my heartfelt thanks to all at Braintree Golf Club whose unbelievable generosity has resulted in such a significant total, which will make such a difference to the lives of the children that PARC supports.”

Meanwhile, Braintree professional Richard Wheeler completed his fifth London Marathon, with the 50-year-old finishing in four hours 34 minutes and raising more than £3,000 for the Children with Cancer charity.
